I had a bizarre and not so rewarding humanitarian trip years ago. And although mine was a completely different experience, I got a lot out of reading your volunteering adventure.

But this line here really makes you stop and think about the larger picture.

It’s almost counterintuitive that well-meaning people might cause more harm by physically being there, while their financial support could have a far more sustainable impact.

I appreciate how this challenges the romanticized idea of voluntourism as a one-size-fits-all solution.

Your example of how $2,000 spent on a trip could fund a local teacher's salary for half a year is a clear and powerful reminder of where our efforts might be better directed.
