I think you have to find a happy "medium" (pardon the pun) between what you want to write about and what attracts readers.

Read the most read articles of any publication in the genres you're interested in through their archive. Many writers will even dissect their own most read and top earning articles and tell you why they think those articles did so well.

I did this. There was an article by Iain Stanely, who did exactly that. I wrote my very first article on the very tips he recommended and it's been my best performing piece...

Titles, subtitles, what benefits can readers get from your articles. What lessons or things they can relate to, learn from and apply in their own lives.

We're all self interested and only read things we are interested in. Think about what you want to get from an article when you're reading it.

At the end of the day, it's not about you, it's about your readers, your audience...
