I'm not sure publishing less and commenting more have a direct correlation to earnings. I think by commenting and engaging you are also attracting more readers to your profile and read your stories to see what you're all about. In that respect, I do think commenting does have an indirect effect on your earnings. I look at commenting, claps, and engagement as promotion of your own work without actually promoting it....Which, BTW, is what makes Medium quite special...
