I've been fortunate enough to be born a native English speaker.

I also speak 3 other languages with varying fluency, depending on how often I speak them and when the last time I had spoken them was.

I find that it's actually easier to get by in smaller countries by learning a few phrases in the local language, English and possibly 1 of the other languages I speak.

However, the larger the country, the more difficult it is using this strategy.

For example, despite Germany's wealth, high education level and the amount of Germans who travel abroad and speak excellent English many of their compatriots back in Germany only speak German for the most part.

But the same could be said about most countries..
