That's funny! In the US, they throw the check down on your table before you even ask for it as if to say, "ok, it's time to go".

I liken it to being a guest in someone's home and they get your coat and give it to you before you're ready to leave.

But in the US it's considered great service.

Let's put it this way, wait staff call customers who linger to long at a table without ordering additional items, "campers".... In Europe, they call them customers..
