Wow, those are quite some experiences Janet. Airbnbs are becoming more hit or miss by the year.

For the most part, I've been pretty lucky. But I'm also a huge, overly paranoid skeptic... Booking.com has definitely raised its game in recent years and I've been using them more and more...

Alot of it is pure luck, but also reading between the lines on reviews, even copying some of their accommodation profile photos and running them through Google image search and seeing what you find.

Many have their own sites, or are on multiple platforms...
